Director of Legal

The Mission: 
International Justice Mission is a human rights agency that secures justice for victims of slavery, sexual exploitation and other forms of violent oppression. IJM lawyers, investigators and aftercare professionals work with local officials to ensure immediate victim rescue and aftercare, to prosecute perpetrators and to promote functioning public justice systems.
The Need: 

IJM is seeking an individual passionate about the work of providing justice and care for the vulnerable and oppressed. In this director role, you will have the opportunity to rescue and restore the lives of those brutally forced into bonded labour situations by developing and guiding a team of advocates in dynamic and varied working environments. This position is based at IJM’s field office in Bangalore, India and reports to the Field Office Director.

Job Location: 


  • Fully understand relevant forced labour laws and criminal procedure
  • Advise the Investigations Department and leadership in preparation and finalisation of Bonded Labour cases to be presented to the Government/Police
  • Supervise casework where IJM advocates assist public prosecutors in Bonded Labour case hearings, including bail proceedings, pre-trial hearings, trial and appeal
  • Develop, maintain and monitor an efficient casework filing and management system for IJM cases
  • Oversee drafting of Writ Petitions and participate in oral arguments before State High Courts (and other courts as needed)
  • Supervise and review all legal research and drafting of legal documents. Prepare internal reports as required by IJM

Leadership and Management

  • Recruit, train, and supervise approximately six IJM legal team members, including advocates and expatriate interns and fellows
  • Ensure that projected activities, outputs and objectives of the department are achieved
  • Provide leadership and legal advice during rescue operations in which IJM participates as a concerned social action group
  • Facilitate weekly case management meetings with the legal team

Relationships and Communication

  • Ensure periodic reporting and dialogue with the FOD regarding the status of the Legal department’s efforts, achievements and challenges faced
  • Coordinate with the Communications department to prepare stories about IJM’s casework for internal and external purposes
  • Coordinate with casework program manager to ensure smooth flow of coordination between different departments

Training and Miscellaneous

  • Oversee legal training programs (including writing and research training) for IJM legal and non-legal staff
  • Provide training to government authorities and other IJM partners on legal issues related to bonded labour law
  • Carry out additional assignments as required by the Field Office Director
Required Skills and Experience: 
  • Five or more years of legal experience as a criminal trial advocate, a lawyer in a corporate legal department or a litigator with a law firm. Litigation experience is preferred
  • Law Degree (L.L.B.). Master’s Degree in Law (L.L.M.) preferred
  • Minimum of three years’ experience managing staff, preferably advocates
  • Demonstrated legal research and writing skills of a high caliber
  • Knowledge of Criminal Procedure Code, Indian Penal code and Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act preferred
  • Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English and Kannada required. Ability to speak and write Tamil and Hindi preferred
