WCD Department Inaugurates Newly Renovated Special Home for Rescued Minors in Mumbai
On 24th June 2019, Monday, Shri. Dr. Hrishikesh Yashod, Commissioner – Women and Child Development, Maharashtra, inaugurated the newly renovated Government Special home for minor victims of sexual abuse and trafficking in Deonar, Mumbai, in the august presence of Shri. Ravi Patil, Deputy Commissioner – Women and Child Development, Maharashtra, Shri. Rahul More – Deputy Divisional Commissioner, Konkan, and Smt. Shobha Shelar, District Officer – Mumbai Suburban. Esteemed members of the District Office, officials of the shelter home, and NGO and other civil society partners also graced the occasion.
The Special Home for minors is the first point of intake for minor girls who are survivors of trafficking. The shelter home plays a crucial role in the protection and rehabilitation of these survivors and has the capacity to house 50 girls.
The Department of Women and Child Development (DWCD), Maharashtra, refurbished the residential area, the kitchen space, the storage room, the activity room, and the library area – thus creating a more hospitable and warm living environment for the girls, while in restorative care. IJM provided innovative solutions to make the home a conducive environment for healing and restoration of the survivors.
“I commend IJM’s affiliation with the government, not only on this project but on many others as well. They always have a healthy approach towards pushing for innovation that positively benefits the survivors. The ‘rebirth’ of this shelter home is only the first step. The DWCD is deeply invested in addressing the needs of every girl who comes to this shelter home, reinstating each one of them back to a good and worthy life.” said Shri. Dr. Hrishikesh Yashod, Commissioner – Women and Child Development, Maharashtra.
IJM is a knowledge partner with the government to effectively protect children from violence and create sustainable solutions to rehabilitate and restore them.
